Review and appraisal
Smoke control designs are usually prepared by the company that will supply or install the system. An independent review assesses whether what is proposed complies with the Building Regulations and the fire strategy, and whether it is adequate for the building, before it is too late or too expensive to change.
What we review
- Smoke control designs and submissions from fire engineers, specialist designers, manufacturers and M&E consultants
- The smoke ventilation part of a fire strategy prepared by the appointed fire engineer
- Contractors' and manufacturers' submissions, calculations, O&M information and commissioning records
What you receive
A written report of our opinion on whether the proposal complies, how it compares with the relevant guidance and standards (such as Approved Document B, BS 9991, BS 9999 and the BS EN 12101 series), and whether it is adequate for the building. Where it does not, or the evidence is missing, we set out clearly the questions the designer needs to answer.
Responsibility for the design stays with the designer.
